AFFIRMATIVE AND NEGATIVE AGREEMENT

Tugas Softskill Bahasa Inggris 2 “Affirmative and Negative Agreement”

      A.     Affirmative Agreement

We can use  “So or Too”.  The function of “So or Too” is to avoid  needless repitition of words from affirmative statement, use the conjunction “And”, followed by a simple statement using “so or too”. There are any differences, “So” used before to be and auxiliary verb, and “too” used after to be and auxiliary verb.

-          When there is only to be in main clause, then the same tenses from to be used in second clause. The formula is:

1.        Too :  Affirmative statement + and + S + to be + too

Example : I am study, and she is too

2.       So : Affirmative statement + and + So + to be + subject

Example : I am study, and so is she

-          When there is only verb without auxiliary verb in main clause, then auxiliary verb (do, does or did) used in second clause and the tenses should be same. The formula is :

1.        Too : Affirmative statement + and + S + Aux verb (do, does, did) + too

Example : I want to buy a new book, and he does too

2.       So : Affirmative statement + and + so + Aux verb (do,does, did) + S

Example : They read a new book, and so did she

-          When there is only Auxiliary verb (will, should, has, have, must,etc) in main clause, then the auxiliary verb used in second clause too. The formula is :

1.        Too : Affirmative statement + and + S + Aux verb only + too

Example : They will go to Bogor, and he will too

2.       So : Affirmative statement + and + So + Aux verb only + S

Example :  He has a new book, and so have I

      B.      Negative Agreement

We can use “Neither or Either”, the function much like “So and Too” in affirmative agreement. But either and neither  are used to indicate negative agreement. The same rules for auxiliary verb, to be are apply. The formula is :

1.        Either : S + negative aux verb + either

Example : We can’t buy the t-shirt, and she can’t either

2.       Neither : Neither + positive aux verb + S

Example : He doesn’t know the library in here, and  neither does she.
