Direct
Speech
Direct speech is used to give the
exact words used by another person or speaker. It’s can be a statement or
question. Direct speech covered by quotation marks. Attribution of direct speech is asked, says,
said, yelled, replied, shouted, ordered, etc.
Pola kalimat :
1. Simple present tense
(+) S+V1(s,es)+O/C
(-) S+ Do/Does+V1+O/C
(?) Do/Does+S+V1+O/C
Example : Nurul said, “I go to campus
today”
2. Present Continuous Tense
(+) S+ To be(am,is,are)V1+ing
(-) S+ To be(is, am, are)+ not+V1+ing
(?) To be(is,am,are)+S+V1+ing
Example : Dian says, “ I am going to
the movie”
3. Present Perfect Tense
(+) S+ Have/has+V3
(-) S+ Have/has+not+V3
(?) Have/has + S+V3
Example : Eka said, “We have some coin
for you”
4. Present Perfect Continuous Tense
(+) S+ Have/has+ Been+V1+ing
(-) S+ Have/has+ Been+Not+V1+ing
(?) Have/has+S+Been+V1+ing
Example : Luthfia said, “ I have been
cooking fried rice”
5. Simple Past Tense
(+) S+ V2+ O/C
(-) S+ did+ not+V1+O/C
(?) Did + S +V1 +O/C
Example : Wulan said, “ I read the
book last month”
6. Past Continuous Tense
(+) S+ To be (was/were)+V1+ing
(-) S + To be (was/were) +not+V1+ing
(?) To be (was/were) + S+ V1+ing
Example : Nisa said, “My family were
going to Bandung last year”
7. Simple Future Tense
(+) S+ will/shall+V1
(-) S + Will/shall +not + V1
(?) Will/shall + S + V1
Example : Asri said, “ I will go to
Surabaya next month”
B.
Indirect
Speech
Indirect speech is used to communicate
or give information what someone else said without using the exact words and
change the statement form to more detail. To change direct speech into indirect
speech is added “that/whatever/if”, it’s conform the pronoun, verb or time
reference.
Pola kalimat :
1. Simple present tense change into
simple past tense
Example :
Direct : Nurul said, “ I go to campus
today”
Indirect : Nurul said that she went
to the campus that day
2. Present continuous tense change into
past continuous tense
Example :
Direct : Dian says, “ I am going to
the movie”
Indirect : Dian says that she was
going to the movie
3. Present Perfect tense change into past
perfect tense
Example :
Direct : Eka said, “We have some coin for you”
Indirect : Eka said that she had some
coin for you
4. Present perfect continuous tense
change into past perfect continuous tense
Example :
Direct : Luthfia said, “ I have been
cooking fried rice”
Indirect : luthfia said that she had
been cooking fried rice
5. Simple past tense change into past
perfect tense
Example :
Direct : Wulan said, “ I read the book
yesterday”
Indirect : Wulan said that she had
read the book the following day
6. Past continuous tense change into past
perfect continuous tense
Example :
Direct : Nisa said, “My family were
going to Bandung last year”
Indirect : Nisa said that her
family had been going to Bandung the previous
year
7. Simple future tense change into past
future tense
Example :
Direct : Asri said, “ I will go to
Surabaya next month”
Indirect : Asri said that she would go
to Surabaya
